Four Weeks Before Moving Get quotations from moving companies. Tour your house and decide which items should be discarded or donated - consider a garage sale. Notify financial organizations, insurance companies, medical practitioners, credit card companies, etc. of your move. Arrange transfer of school records if changing schools. Arrange for shutting off of all utilities and the connection of all utilities at your new home. Discontinue any services such as cleaning services, pool maintenance, window cleaners, snow remover, landscapers etc. Cancel telephone landline or transfer for the last possible moment of the day of your move. Advise Canada Post and complete change of address cards. Check and clear any outstanding property taxes on your present property. Have appraisals done on any valuable items in case of insurance claims from moving company (Taking pictures of these items is a great benefit). Ensure adequate insurance for household goods is still in place while goods are in transit or storage. Organize any work to be completed at your new home.
Three Weeks Before Moving Plan to use up most of your food items before the move. Make a plan on what to do with kids and pets on moving day. Assign colour/number for each room to label boxes. Collect all paperwork and combine into moving folder that you can transport with you to your new home. Pack up infrequently used items.
Two Weeks Before Moving Return any borrowed items. Pack up majority of items.
One Week Before Moving Pack a suitcase of clothes/necessities for a week: include medications, snacks, pet food, toiletries etc. Pack up remainder of belongings - Don't forget items in your back yard and shed.
Moving Day Double check every room. Leave any warranties, manuals, special instructions, location of mailbox and any keys for the new owner. Lock all windows and doors. Make sure the place is spotless before you leave for the last time.
Storing and Packing Tips Use packing paper, pads for inventory and felt markers Heavy twine, masking tape, boxes and containers for packing Empty gas tanks from lawn mowers, outboard motors etc. Remove all batteries from appliances and toys Mark contents of all boxes clearly, specifying which room they are to be placed in Set aside articles you wish to carry in the car in cartons marked 'Do Not Load' Make sure you keep a telephone with you Tie or tape brooms and mops together and bundle curtain rods Make sure all fragile items are indicated Carry all jewellery, valuable papers and currency with you Ensure tops are secure for all liquids Pack all books on edge in small boxes Crate glass table tops, large mirrors and valuable artwork Limit carton weight to about 60 pounds Tie or tape all boxes securely Lamp shades should be placed in boxes by themselves Small appliances should be placed in the bottom of boxes Heavy china with extra padding at the bottom of the box Flat pieces should be placed on their edges Small items can be placed in a smaller box inside a larger box Dismantle large power tools before moving Remove fixtures fastened to the wall Clothes and drapes should be placed in the wardrobes supplied by the movers Avoid overloading drawers when packing items in dressers Try not to use newspapers as the ink can rub off Do not leave shelves loose in the stoves or refrigerators Do not roll mattresses or rugs - the movers have special cartons
On Moving Day... If possible, have friends or relatives take care of small children and pets Check each carton for loss or damage Prepare a list of damaged or lost articles Make sure movers are paid Get all meters read and utilities turned on in new home Make arrangements to have appliances hooked up Setup bedrooms and kitchen first Have a tool kit handy
